Advocacy

Can one person make a difference?

Yes, you can make a difference in this world! What you think is important! One person can make a difference!

  • Real change starts from the bottom up!
  • You can influence attitudes and opinions.
  • Getting other people involved will make a difference.
  • Local politicians listen when a large group of citizens, coming from diverse backgrounds, agree on a particular issue.
  • Getting involved makes sure YOUR VOICE will be heard.

Lessons learned about advocacy:

  • One person can make a difference.
  • Never be satisfied to say “I wish I could do something about that!” Say “I will do something about that!”
  • A few grains of salt in a stew will not change it, but too much salt can make it completely distasteful and overwhelming. We can add a potato to soak up the salt or try to improve it in other ways. So it is with the Internet. Pornography and child predators have become overwhelming and is changing the lives of children and destroying families. With the click of a mouse, children are hurled into an adult world filled with images that can never be erased from their minds. Do we say to our children they are not allowed to use the Internet because porn is there, or do we try to make it better and safer for them?
  • Keep your eye on your ultimate goal. How people respond is out of your control. Try to accept that as you do what you can as one individual.
  • Set daily goals for yourself and encourage those helping you to set goals. One person can make a difference—it may be one of them who will make that difference!
  • Try not to allow yourself to get discouraged. Tape notes of encouragement and reminders that this is the right thing to do to your computer or where you will see them often--especially the ones from your children! There will also be negative responses from those who do not agree with what you trying to accomplish. If you become discouraged, take a break from your work and find a lighter pace. You will be more effective and last longer.
  • Don’t allow yourself to become consumed with obtaining your goal. Keep your work in its place so it does not interfere with family and daily living. Achieving your goal can become an addiction.
  • A.S.A.P. – Always Say A Prayer! A prayer for guidance, and a prayer of thanks for each small victory.
